Why Travel on a Missions Trip?

Why Travel on a Missions Trip?

Now that you've found this page, then at least you're interested in knowing the answer to the question, "Why travel on a missions trip?" Even more specifically, "Why should I consider traveling on a YOM Team Outreach mission trip?"  Here is what the YOM Australia team is all about as an example.

Think about--traveling almost 8,000 miles on a single flight across the Pacific Ocean for 14 straight hours to spend 32 days in the winter time traveling over 3,000 miles in a 12-passenger minibus to 12 different local churches and ministries waking up early and going to bed late each evening to tell a lost and dying world about Jesus Christ and to encourage Christians in their walk with Christ.  Is it really worth it?

Well, we think it is, and don't just take our word for it! We've reached out to our Australian missionaries, pastors, evangelists, and dear friends that we've met and made throughout the years to have them answer that question for you. Here's what they had to say...

Kyle and Jamie Sutton
Friendship Baptist Church
Carnegie, Melbourne, Australia

Missionaries operating in foreign fields are always in need of some measure of encouragement. The Australia-bound Pensacola Team has been such an annual blessing to us over the past few years. May the Lord continue to use you all in His holy service.

The Sutton family have been missionaries and church planters to Australia since 2001 and are sent out by the International Board of Jewish Missions (IBJM). In both the Sydney and now in the Melbourne vicinity, their heart's desire has been to reach the Jewish community for Christ. Their daughter Bec is a senior English major at Pensacola Christian College.

Don and Sue Leys
Condell Park Christian School
Condell Park, Sydney, Australia

A Team Outreach Australia Missions Trip will better inform you as you pray and support foreign missions, and enlarge your vision of how God may potentially call you directly into missions work. It will expand your repertoire and toolkit in serving Him by taking you on "adventures" beyond your comfort zone, and, most importantly, it will provide much needed encouragement and practical help to Australians who minister throughout this vast land of Australia.

Since 1980, Don has been Condell Park Christian School's Principal (Administrator) and his wife Sue has taught Kindergarten, and Year 1 & 2 children for over 38 years. Currently, two Pensacola Christian College graduates teach and serve on the Condell Park Christian School staff.

Glenn and Erin Matthews
Condell Park Bible Church
Condell Park, Sydney, Australia

The arrival of mission teams is always a highlight for our church. Not only is the team able to assist us in practical aspects of the Lord’s work but they provide a lot of encouragement for our congregation, especially our young people. There is always a lot of excitement about making new friends, listening to their testimonies and learning what the Lord is doing in their lives. The whole encounter is wonderfully uplifting.

Glenn is the Pastor of the Condell Park Bible Church and his wife Erin besides being involved in various church ministries oversees their annual Winter Holiday Kid's Club. For 79 years, Condell Park Bible Church continues to unashamedly preach and teach the Word of God as they reach the lost for Christ and equip the saints for service.

Fraser and Robyn Young
Evangelist (Fraser)
Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia

Ministry trips are always a great investment, and for several reasons: Firstly, you get to travel and sample different cultures. You have the privilege of representing the Lord Jesus Christ, your country, your local church and your college. You will have amazing witnessing opportunities, especially among young Aussies. You get to labour with and maybe even learn from established local Australian churches and pastors. You get to help establish newer churches. You will witness people coming to Christ. You’ll have opportunities to encourage other believers. You will be challenged physically, mentally and most importantly, spiritually. And lastly, God will be glorified through your faithfulness in service.

I cannot speak highly enough of the 2017 YOM Team Outreach Australia. I was privileged to spend some time with the team at several locations across my travels, and to talk at length with a few. To a person, the team worked tirelessly, behaved impeccably and gave of themselves unselfishly.

Maybe God is leading you to travel on a YOM missions trip and even maybe specifically join Team Outreach Australia?

Evangelist Fraser Young was born again at the tender age of seven. He is in his 27th year of full time evangelism. Previous to this he pastored in Sydney’s western suburbs. Brother Young travels extensively around Australia, and also preaches regularly in Spain, Italy, Thailand and New Zealand. Married to Robyn for almost 35 years, the Youngs have four grown children, 4 grandsons and a new grand daughter, and live in Coffs Harbour, northern NSW.

Scott Pauley
Beckley, West Virginia, United States

There is nothing like laboring together in the gospel! Working together for the cause of world evangelism is the greatest work in all the world. It was my privilege to work with one of the Youth Outreach Ministry teams during a recent campaign in Australia. As an evangelist I was blessed by their desire to help the local church and reach the lost with the message of Christ. The team was well-trained and directed by Spirit-filled leaders. God used each of them. It is my prayer that God will raise up an army of such young people for the gospel’s sake. Working with the Lord is the adventure of a lifetime.

After spending several years serving as a Director of Student Ministries and a college Vice President, since 2015 Dr. Pauley has traveled in full-time evangelism. His passion is to preach the gospel and he has a burden to influence this generation for Christ. Team Outreach Australia had the privilege of ministering along with Brother Pauley at New Beginnings Baptist Church in Brisbane, Australia, during summer 2017.

Jim and Becky Heberle
Australian Outback Ministries
Kallangur, Queensland, Australia

Australia is a land of extremes.  You have the big bustling cities, the amazing beaches, and the rugged Outback.  The Lord has called our family to reach out into the rural, Outback towns of Queensland.  These areas can be very isolated and many struggle to cope with the issues that those in the big cities don’t have to deal with.

The 2017 YOM team is the first team that we have had the privilege to take with us on our travels.  They were a wonderful group of young people that were willing to do whatever was needed.  In these rural outback towns, you have to be very flexible, you never know what is going to happen.  The team did an amazing job of running an after-school Bible Club, helping to give the gospel out in 17 different outback towns, cooked meals for large groups of people, and were an encouragement to our three churches out there.

We travelled many dry, dusty, dirt roads together and got to show them so many unique animals and places.  Our hearts were truly knit with the team by the end of our time with them, and it was very hard to see them leave.  We look forward to hopefully hosting many more YOM teams in the future!!!  So please, consider joining the Australia team for 2018 and come see for yourself that serving God is the most incredible adventure ever!!!!!!!

Since 2004, Jim and Becky Heberle have been serving as missionaries in Australia with a specific burden to reach the Aboriginal and Outback communities in western Queensland. As they partner with other ministries, their aim is to evangelize, baptize, and teach those who come to Christ through the establishment of churches which they currently have in Taroom, Murgon, and Eidsvold.  During 2017, Team Outreach Australia had the privilege to minister along side of them and their children James and Lydia and caught a vision of their burden and great need for additional laborers.

Decision Time

As you can tell from our ministry partners and their testimonies, mission trips are wonderful tools that God can and will use in the life of an individual to bring glory to Himself, to encourage His people, and to ultimately change that individual's life.

So, are you still considering traveling on a missions team? ...maybe even considering Team Outreach Australia?  Although we weren't planning on having a "theme" song for our 2017 summer team, the following song quickly became a team favorite as it summarized our commitment to our Lord, to each other, and to the ministries that God had allowed us to serve.

As you listen, notice the beginning words, "Surrender to His call"--is God calling you to step out by faith and travel on a summer missions team?

"I will walk Your way, bravely I will trust Your hand of grace. I will take each step You’ve chosen for me, as I’m on this journey of faith. I will walk Your way." Are you able to say this in your own life? Why not walk His way, trust Him, and take that step of faith! You can begin by "surrendering" to His call to travel on a summer missions trip. It will absolutely change your life!
